Immunefi and the Ethereum Foundation have launched a $1.5 million Attackathon to enhance Ethereum's protocol security, marking the first-ever crowdsourced security audit competition.
Immunefi and the Ethereum Foundation have officially launched the first-ever Attackathon, offering a total reward pool of $1.5 million aimed at enhancing the security of the Ethereum protocol. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to engage the global security community in a collaborative effort to identify and address vulnerabilities within the Ethereum ecosystem.
The Attackathon represents a significant milestone in the Ethereum ecosystem, marking the largest crowdsourced security audit competition to date. Hosted by Immunefi, the event is structured as a time-bound code review program that invites elite security researchers to participate actively.
The initiative follows an educational phase that aimed to increase accessibility and engagement among security researchers, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the competition.
The Attackathon is supported by a diverse range of sponsors from the Ethereum community, including:
These sponsors have contributed to a dedicated vault on Immunefi, which transparently displays the allocation of funds and streamlines the payment process for security researchers.
Fredrik Svantes, Protocol Security Research Lead at the Ethereum Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "We’re excited to bring the global security community together to strengthen Ethereum protocol’s security. This is not only the first-ever crowdsourced security audit, but also a proactive step toward ensuring Ethereum protocol’s future and its growing impact on our daily lives."
Mitchell Amador, Founder and CEO of Immunefi, highlighted the importance of community participation, saying, "We’ve created a dynamic environment for security researchers to join the largest security initiative the Ethereum community has seen. This is the moment where each participant contributes to fortifying Ethereum protocol, ensuring a safer future for users worldwide."
Immunefi is recognized as the largest crowdsourced security platform for web3, currently protecting over $190 billion in user funds across various projects. The platform has a robust community of over 45,000 researchers and has paid out more than $110 million in bug bounties, saving users over $25 billion from potential vulnerabilities.
The Attackathon is a pivotal event for the Ethereum community, fostering collaboration among security researchers and enhancing the protocol's security framework. As the competition unfolds, it promises to not only identify vulnerabilities but also to empower the community in safeguarding the future of Ethereum.
